About IU's SharePoint Online third-party add-on policy

A wide range of solutions is available for SharePoint Online from third parties (that is, vendors other than Microsoft). At Indiana University, to suggest add-ons, contact Tier 2.

Site collection administrators are free to install third-party solutions without the approval of the Governance Committee.

However, add-ons that require tenant-wide administrative privileges will be reviewed by the Governance Committee based on the following criteria:

  • Whether the product has the potential to interfere with the stability and performance of the SharePoint Online production environment
  • Potential security issues
  • The level and type of security access the add-on requires
  • Whether the funding and licensing requirements have been met
  • Who is responsible for supporting the product
  • Whether the vendor provides sufficient documentation
  • How the add-on will be affected by SharePoint Online updates from Microsoft
  • How the product scales
  • Staffing resources available to put the product into production

If the issues listed above are not addressed to the satisfaction of the SharePoint Online Governance Committee, the third-party add-on will not be integrated into the IU SharePoint service.
