At IU, what is Shibboleth?

Shibboleth is a single sign-on federated identity system; see What are single sign-on and federated authentication? Federation refers to a collection of web applications that authenticate against the same identity provider. The primary advantage of this is that this authentication is valid across all applications in the federation, so once logged into a federated service, a user is logged into all services within the federation.

Federated services at IU include IUware, Box, Canvas, Microsoft Imagine, Career Services, Big 10 Academic Alliance (formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation), NoMoreClipboard, and the Indiana CTSI portal, among others. If you are the web administrator of a service that uses IU Shibboleth but is not currently listed on Status.IU, email IT Notice to request that your service be added.

Shibboleth differs from CAS in that it can return more information about the user logging in. Some applications require details about the user beyond that returned by CAS, and Shibboleth is useful in these cases.

To determine if Shibboleth is the right choice for your application, see At IU, should my web application use CAS or Shibboleth authentication?
