Shibboleth at IU

Shibboleth is a single sign-on federated identity system. Federation refers to a collection of web applications that authenticate against the same identity provider. The primary advantage of this is that this authentication is valid across all applications in the federation, so once logged into a federated service, a user is logged into all services within the federation.

Federated services at IU include IUware, Box, Canvas, Microsoft Imagine, Career Services, Big 10 Academic Alliance (formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation), NoMoreClipboard, and the Indiana CTSI portal, among others. If you are the web administrator of a service that uses IU Shibboleth but is not currently listed on Status.IU, email IT Notice to request that your service be added.

Shibboleth differs from CAS in that it uses SAML metadata to provide more information about the user logging in. Some applications require details about the user beyond that returned by CAS, and Shibboleth is useful in these cases.
