Shibboleth at IU

Shibboleth is a single sign-on federated identity system. Federation refers to a collection of web applications that authenticate against the same identity provider. The primary advantage of this is that this authentication is valid across all applications in the federation, so once logged into a federated service, a user is logged into all services within the federation.

Shibboleth serves the SAML or CAS protocol. SAML uses metadata to provide more information about the user logging in (attributes). Some applications require details about the user beyond that returned by the CAS protocol, and SAML is useful in these cases.

Federated services at IU include Canvas, Career Services, Big 10 Academic Alliance (formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation), NoMoreClipboard, and the Indiana CTSI portal, among others.
