Use Texthelp Read&Write Gold to convert digital text into an audio file

Texthelp Read&Write Gold is available at no charge to Indiana University students, faculty, and staff through IUware.

With Read&Write Gold, you can convert selected text into an MP3 or WAV audio file that you can listen to on your computer or mobile device.

Note:
Before beginning, make sure you are using the All Features toolbar in Read&Write. If you are not, click the down arrow to the right of the Texthelp logo. Hover the cursor over Current Toolbar, and then select All Features.
  1. In your document or browser window, select all of the text you wish to convert to an audio file.
  2. Once you've selected your text, click the Speech Maker button (musical note icon) in the Read&Write toolbar.
  3. A new window will open, and the text you've selected will be within. Review the text to ensure it is correct; make any corrections in the text box. If the text looks correct, click the Next button at the bottom of the window.
  4. The next window will be "Voice Settings". In this window, you can raise and lower the pitch of the voice, increase or decrease the speed at which it speaks, adjust the volume, and select from a variety of different voices. After making any adjustments, click the Test Voice button to sample what the voice will sound like. Once you are satisfied with the voice settings, click the Next button at the bottom of the window.
  5. The next window will be "File Settings". Click the Browse button. From the window that opens, select the location on your computer where you want to save the audio file. Enter a name in the "File name" field, and click Save. The "Save As" window will close, and you will be back at the "File Settings" window.
    Note:
If you click the Browse button to choose a file name and save the location, Read&Write will save to your My Documents folder by default.
  6. Select the format in which you wish to save the audio file (WAV or MP3), and click the Create button.
  7. Your audio file has been created and saved to your computer.
