Install the Excel Data Analysis ToolPak add-in using a screen reader

Overview

This guide details how to install the free Microsoft Data Analysis ToolPak add-in for Microsoft Excel using a screen reader. To learn what the Analysis ToolPak can do, check out the Microsoft support article Use the Analysis ToolPak to perform complex data analysis.

Install the Data Analysis ToolPak

Note:
To complete this process correctly, be sure you are using JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver.

JAWS and NVDA

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel. The Excel landing page will load with focus on the blank workbook list item.
  2. Press Alt and then press T to access the "Excel Options" dialog.
  3. Arrow down to "Add-ins", and then press Alt-A to go to the "Manage combo" box.
  4. In the "Manage combo" box, make sure Excel Add-ins is selected. If it is not selected, tab down to "Excel Add-ins", and then press Enter.
  5. Press Tab to select the Go… button, and then press Enter.

    This will bring up the "Add-ins" dialog box, and focus should be on the Analysis ToolPak checkbox, which will not be checked.

  6. Press the Spacebar to check the box for Analysis ToolPak, and then press Enter.

Now the Data Analysis ToolPak should be installed in Microsoft Excel; however, UITS recommends that you verify the installation.

VoiceOver

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel. The Excel landing page will load with focus on the blank workbook list item.
  2. Press VO-M to access the Apple menu bar.
  3. Right arrow over to "Tools".
  4. Down arrow to "Excel add-ins", and press Return.
  5. The "Add-ins" dialog box will appear, and focus will be on the table of options. Press Ctrl-Option-Shift-down arrow to enter the table.
  6. VoiceOver will announce the Analysis ToolPak checkbox, which will not be checked. Press VO-Spacebar to check the Analysis Toolpak box.
  7. Press Tab to get to the OK button, and then press VO-Spacebar.

Now the Data Analysis ToolPak should be installed in Microsoft Excel; however, UITS recommends that you verify the installation.

Verify ToolPak is installed

Windows

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel.
  2. Open a new workbook.
  3. Focus is on the blank workbook item; press Enter.
  4. Press Alt-A to go to the Data tab, and then try either of the following options:
    • Press Ctrl-right arrow until you get to the "Analysis" group. Focus should now be on the Data Analysis button.
    • Press Y and then press 2. This will open the "Data Analysis" dialog.
  5. If you can get to either the Data Analysis button in the ribbon or the Data Analysis dialog, you have successfully installed the Data Analysis ToolPak add-in in Excel.

macOS

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel.
  2. Press Command-N to open a new workbook.
  3. With a workbook open in Excel, press VO-M to access the Apple menu bar.
  4. Right arrow over to Tools.
  5. Down arrow until you get to the Data Analysis… option in the menu.
  6. If you can access the Data Analysis menu option, you have successfully installed the Data Analysis ToolPak add-in in Excel.
