Use the Qualtrics LTI in Canvas

On this page:

Overview

Qualtrics can be integrated into Canvas as an external tool, allowing you to access and publish Qualtrics surveys within Canvas and to create assignments that incorporate Qualtrics surveys. Qualtrics surveys can serve as a replacement for some features of Canvas Classic Quizzes, such as the ability to create anonymous quizzes. Classic Quizzes (formerly known as Canvas Quizzes) are being phased out and replaced by the New Quizzes tool, which currently lacks some of the features of Classic Quizzes.

With the Qualtrics LTI, you can manage the Qualtrics surveys used for your Canvas assignments, add a Qualtrics survey to a Canvas assignment, and customize survey questions or greetings using embedded data fields. These fields can be customized by student, course section, instructor/TA, and more. Additionally, you can pass grades from a Qualtrics survey to the Canvas gradebook.

Note:
This is an instructor tool. Only those with a teacher, co-instructor, or TA role in Canvas will be able to access this tool. Those with only a student role will not be able to access it to add or modify access to surveys in Canvas, even though the link will be visible in their user account menu in the global navigation bar.

Get started

The Qualtrics LTI link is located in the global navigation bar on the far left, under the Account tab. Navigate to your account and select Qualtrics LTI from the list of tools that appears beneath your name. This will take you to a page where you can add or remove Qualtrics surveys in your Canvas courses.

To log in and set up the Qualtrics LTI:

  1. If you are using the Qualtrics LTI for the first time, you will be prompted to authorize the tool to access your Canvas account. Select Authorize.
  2. In the "Select a Qualtrics domain" box, enter/select Indiana University, and then select the blue Login now button.
  3. When prompted to sign into your Qualtrics account, select the Sign in with SSO link at the bottom (do not enter a username and password). It is important that you sign on using SSO to ensure you are logging in with your IU account and not a personal or business account.
  4. Enter iu as the Organization ID.
  5. Select Approve, and you will be taken to the landing page titled "Your Surveys".

Create an assignment

To create an assignment in Canvas using the Qualtrics LTI:

  1. Create and publish a survey in Qualtrics.
    • Your survey must be published to be accessible in Canvas.
    • To ensure that the instructions are visible to students when they go to complete the survey, you should include any instructions for completing the survey in the Qualtrics survey itself, rather than in the Canvas assignment instructions.
  2. Link the survey to Canvas.
    1. In Canvas, select Qualtrics LTI in the global navigation bar, under the Account tab.
    2. If your survey does not appear in the list, select Add survey, and then find and select the desired survey. Once added, it will be listed as "Active" as long as it remains published in Qualtrics.
      Note:

Give your survey an informative title so that it is easy to locate; for example, PSY111 Mid-Semester Course Evaluation. You also can add labels to your surveys in the Qualtrics LTI.

    3. Activate any embedded data fields you want to use in your survey.
    4. Select Standard Canvas assignment; this is necessary for a graded assignment.
      Note:

Embedded data fields will not work if In-class survey (QR code) is selected.

  3. Add the survey as an assignment in Canvas.
    1. Create a new assignment with the submission type External tool.
    2. Select Find, and then select Qualtrics LTI from the list.
    3. In the pop-up window, select the survey you want to add to the assignment.
    4. Save or publish your assignment.
    Note:
    • The Qualtrics LTI lets you automatically send course-wide announcements when the assignment is published and automated reminder messages to students who have not yet completed the survey.
    • Grades can be set to Complete/incomplete or be reported as a percentage of the survey score.
    • Canvas assignments that use an external tool cannot be set to 0 points. The point value must be a number other than zero, regardless of the grading scale. If you want the assignment to be ungraded, select Do not count towards final grade. If the assignment is worth 0 points, submissions will not appear correctly in the Canvas gradebook and you may lose data.
