ARCHIVED: On my LISTSERV list, how do I add subscribers?
Note: IU retired its LISTSERV system in spring 2012, replacing it with IU List, a new mailing list service. See About IU List
In LISTSERV, as a list owner, you can add subscribers by sending a command to the LISTSERV server, or at Indiana University, by using the LISTSERV web interface.
On this page:
Using LISTSERV commands
To add subscribers to your LISTSERV list, send the following command in the body (not the subject) of an email message to the LISTSERV server:
ADD listname userid@host.domain firstname lastname
Replace listname
with the name of your list,
userid@host.domain
with the full email
address of the new subscriber, and firstname
and
lastname
with the full name of the new subscriber.
Notes:
- When sending commands to the LISTSERV server, format your messages as plain text rather than HTML.
- Use the
ADD
command when subscribing someone else to the list. Use theSUBSCRIBE
command only to subscribe yourself; see ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I subscribe to a LISTSERV list?
Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your list:
Campus | Server address | |
---|---|---|
IU Bloomington | listserv@indiana.edu |
|
IUPUI | listserv@iupui.edu |
|
IU Kokomo | listserv@iuk.edu |
|
IU Northwest | listserv@iun.edu |
|
IU South Bend | listserv@iusb.edu |
|
IU Southeast | listserv@ius.edu |
Never send commands to the address of the mailing
list (e.g., to listname@indiana.edu
). Send
only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.
Subscribers will receive individual notices that they have been subscribed to the list. If you don't want the subscribers to be notified, use the following command instead, making the same substitutions:
QUIET ADD listname userid@host.domain firstname lastname
You can issue several of these commands in a single mail message to add multiple people to your list at one time.
Another method of adding multiple subscribers to your list is to use
the IMPORT
option. To do this, send a command to
LISTSERV in the following format:
ADD listname DD=X IMPORT //X DD * userid1@host1.domain1 firstname lastname userid2@host2.domain2 firstname lastname userid3@host3.domain3 firstname lastname userid4@host4.domain4 firstname lastname userid5@host5.domain5 firstname lastname /*
Replace listname
with the name of your list,
useridX@hostX.domainX
with the full email
addresses of the new subscribers, and firstname
and
lastname
with the full names of the new subscribers.
Subscribers will receive individual notices that they have been
subscribed to the list. If you don't want the subscribers to be
notified, change ADD
in the above example to QUIET
ADD
, as illustrated below:
QUIET ADD listname DD=X IMPORT
