ARCHIVED: Descriptions of available accounts at IUPUI
If you are a student or faculty or staff member at IUPUI, you are eligible for a specific set of computing accounts. If you have additional computing needs, you may request other accounts. The following describes the available accounts at IUPUI.
Initial accounts
Most students, faculty, and staff at IUPUI are entitled to the following accounts:
- IUPUI email account: For reading and sending email
- ADS Domain account: Necessary to log into Windows computers in the Student Technology Centers (STCs)
- Kerberos: For authentication for most campus services, excluding Oncourse
If you used the Account Management Service (AMS) or attended orientation, you received these accounts at that time. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document Create your first IU computing accounts (admitted students, faculty, staff, affiliates, and those returning to IU)
If your accounts were not successfully created, do one of the following:

CFS account
A CFS account provides you with 100MB of hard disk space for storing files; you can access this storage space from any computer that is connected to the Internet. To request a CFS account, follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, how can I apply for an account on the CFS?
Unix systems
The Unix systems can be divided into two categories, general use and research only, which are described below:
- General use: Steel is a cluster of
four Sun Ultra-SPARC workstations running Solaris. All Indiana
University students, faculty, and staff may create accounts on
Steel. Steel supports news, web access, and email, as well as a
variety of research-oriented software. Steel accounts replace
Cord accounts at IUPUI for editing personal home pages that appear at
mypage.iupui.edu
(formerlyphp.iupui.edu
). - Research only: The system described here
is configured to support only computing research. The Research
SP does not accept in-bound mail from the network. Furthermore,
newsreaders, information clients (e.g., Lynx), and IRC clients are not
supported on this system. For more information, visit:
https://www.indiana.edu/~rats/research/
The UITS Research SP system is dedicated to the research needs of IU Bloomington and IUPUI faculty, staff, and graduate students. Staff and graduate students must have a faculty sponsor. For more information about the Research SP, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, what was the Research SP system?
Specialized systems
IUIS accounts
Indiana University Information Services (IUIS) is an Amdahl mainframe running the MVS operating system and is home to a wealth of information about IUPUI. Faculty and students use IUIS primarily to access services such as class registration, student records and financial information (available through Insite), the student advising system, information about degree programs, and electronic class rosters. Administrators, staff, and faculty use IUIS to maintain and access IUPUI's institutional data.
Many of the above IUIS services are available without an account. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: How do I open a session to IUIS?
In order to request an IUIS account, faculty and staff may print and submit a copy of the User Agreement, available at:
http://www.indiana.edu/~iudata/dataadmin/CDS/forms.html
Note: Submission of this form does not constitute a complete request for access to institutional applications or data; for access, users must also contact the appropriate Data Manager. Also note that this form is not in itself an application for a SafeWord card.
For more information, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I get an IUIS account?
Departmental LAN accounts
Request a departmental LAN account from the network administrator for the department that owns the account.
The university web server (Champion)
The university web server provides WWW space for online publication by IUPUI departments and officially recognized organizations (including officially recognized student groups). For more information on obtaining an account on the university web server, visit "Accounts on the IUPUI Web Server" at:
http://webmaster.indiana.edu/account_info/aciupui.shtml
