ARCHIVED: At IU, can I use FTP to access my CFS space?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

Note: UITS has retired CFS. A new file storage service for researchers became available in a public test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see ARCHIVED: Research File System (RFS) at Indiana University Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu is being decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell IU.EDU.

While you cannot use commonly available, insecure FTP clients (such as Hummingbird FTP and Transmit) to access the CFS at Indiana University, you can use a secure FTP (SFTP) client to gain SFTP access to the CFS. SFTP clients include the one built into SSH Secure Shell for Windows, MacSFTP for Mac OS and Mac OS X, and the Unix sftp command.

Windows

If you are an IU student, faculty member, or staff member, you can download the SSH Secure Shell client for Windows from IUware Online at:

  http://iuware.iu.edu/

To make an SFTP connection to the CFS in Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start and select Programs, then SSH Secure Shell, and finally Secure File Transfer Client. If you are using a different SFTP client or if you moved your SSH Secure Shell folder after installation, then launch your client appropriately.

Note: In the Windows Student Technology Centers (STCs), click Start and select Programs, then Utilities, and finally Secure Shell Client. Once the client launches, find and click the Windows menu item at the top, then choose New File Transfer.

  2. In the SFTP client window, click the "Connect" icon. (In SSH Secure Shell, this looks like a small computer, and if you pause your mouse over it, you will see the word "Connect".)
  3. In the "Host Name:" field, type:
      cfs.iu.edu
In the "User Name:" field, type your username. Click Connect, and supply your password in the dialog box which appears next.
  4. This should place you at the top level in your CFS space. To learn more about using the SFTP client for Windows, please refer to the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: Transfer files in Windows using an SSH or SFTP client

Macintosh

If you are an IU student, faculty member, or staff member, you can download MacSFTP, an SFTP client for Mac OS and Mac OS X, from IUware Online at:

  http://iuware.iu.edu/

Note: You'll need to log in with your IU Network ID to download this software.

For instructions on using this software to transfer files, see the Knowledge Base document ARCHIVED: In Mac OS X, how do I use Cyberduck to transfer files over SFTP? To connect to the CFS, use the hostname cfs.iu.edu.
