Introduction

Note: UITS has retired CFS. A new file storage service for researchers became available in a public test phase in fall 2005; for more information, see ARCHIVED: Research File System (RFS) at Indiana University Also, the AFS cell ovpit@indiana.edu is being decommissioned. It will be replaced by the OpenAFS cell IU.EDU.

At Indiana University, CFSWeb is the web interface to the CFS.

To connect to your CFS space via the web, you will need to have a current web browser that supports secure connections via the SSL protocol. In your browser, go to:

  https://cfs.iu.edu/

You will be prompted to enter your username and password. You will need to enter your ADS Domain username and password.

After you connect to your CFS space on the web, you will find yourself at the CFSWeb home, which shows the following:

  • Your username after "User:" and the name of the folder you are currently in after "Folder:", at the top left
  • The View Available Space and the Help links on the top right
  • Two rows of buttons (described below) including New Folder, Upload file, Logout, Delete, Move, Copy, Rename, and Unzip
  • A directory listing of files and folders you have placed in the CFS

The directory listing

The directory listing consists of five columns:

  • Select: This column contains a checkbox. Before CFS was read-only, you could use this checkbox to select files or folders for action via the tools in the CFS toolkit.
  • Column 2: This column contains an icon denoting the kind of file stored.
  • Name: This column lists the names of your files or folders.
  • Size: This column lists the sizes of your files in kilobytes.
  • Modified: This column lists the date and time each file or folder was last modified.

If you click the column headings Name, Size, or Modified, the directory listing will redisplay sorted by that heading.

Note: In this document, the terms "directory" and "folder" are used interchangeably.

The CFSWeb toolkit

At the top of the screen, you will find the CFSWeb toolkit, a collection of buttons for performing various tasks. If there are more than fifteen items in the directory listing, a duplicate CFSWeb toolkit is provided at the bottom as well. However, because CFS is now read-only, none of the toolkit buttons work except for the Logout button.

Navigating folders

Click a directory or folder to enter the folder. Once inside a folder, click the Back button on your browser to return to the previous level. You can also go up one level by clicking Up one level at the top of the directory listing. Near the top of the screen, next to "Folder:", you will see the complete hierarchy for your current location, for example:

  Home > Assignments > Papers > history.doc

Each folder or file will be a link; you can click any of the links to go directly to that folder or file.

When you click a filename, the appropriate application for that file type may launch if your browser and operating system understand the file type. For example, if you are accessing CFSWeb under Windows Internet Explorer, clicking files with the .doc extension (i.e., Microsoft Word files) may launch Word within the web browser itself.

Downloading files to your computer

Right-click the filename (in Mac OS and Mac OS X, Ctrl-click), and then select an option to save the file (the exact text of the option you choose will depend upon your web browser). Choose a location to save the file, and then click the appropriate button to save the file to disk.

Viewing your CFS space usage

Click the link labeled View Available Space on the top right to see your current CFS quota and how much space you are currently using.

Logging out of CFSWeb

The Logout button in the CFSWeb toolkit will take you to a screen that says "To logout, close the web browser window".

The first time you log into CFSWeb, your web browser caches your username and password and uses them for all subsequent logins while your browser is open. To ensure that no one else gains access to your CFSWeb session, close all instances of the web browser you used to access CFSWeb.

Getting help

Click the link labeled Help at the top right. Some of the pages within CFSWeb also have Help links that display more topical help.
