Troubleshooting campus network connections in IUB or IUPUI campus housing using Windows

Note:
To connect a wired (Ethernet, cabled) device to the IU network, you first need to register the device.

If you're having problems connecting to the Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI network with your Windows computer from your campus housing residence, check the following:

Physical connection

Network cable

  • IU Bloomington: In Briscoe, Collins, Read Beck and Read Clark, Spruce Hall, 3rd & Union, Tulip Tree apartments, Wells Quadrangle, and Union Street Center, you will need to provide your own standard Cat 5 or Cat 6 Ethernet straight-through patch cord. In all other campus housing, you will find an IU proprietary Ethernet crossover cable attached to the wall data jack.

    Campus View uses both standard Ethernet cables and IU wall cables, depending on the room. In the back bedroom, use a standard Ethernet cable; use an IU wall cable in all other rooms.

  • IUPUI: In Ball Residence Hall, the Campus Apartments on the Riverwalk, North Hall, and the Tower, use a commercial Ethernet cable.

Data jack

If the room contains more than one data jack, try the other. All data jacks are active, but this can isolate the one with a problem.

Error messages

Duplicate computer name

Network issues

  • Error "Unable to browse the network": Your computer is unable to connect to the network, and therefore cannot send or receive data. Double-check the configuration settings and your network cable. If you have done this and the problem persists, contact your campus Support Center.
  • DHCP error: A DHCP error occurs when your computer cannot communicate with the DHCP server, which is necessary for leasing an IP address to your computer. If you encounter this error, it might be that your computer cannot pick up the IP address automatically. To fix this, run the UITS Network Repair Tool.

    If you still see this error after running the Network Repair Tool, contact your campus Support Center.

The IU Secure wireless network is available in most IU Bloomington and IUPUI campus residences.

IU Bloomington: You may operate a properly configured, FCC-approved wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the Extending the University Data Network (IT-19) and Wireless Networking (IT-20) policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO) only if your residence is listed at Wireless Networking: Temporary Exception 2 (ITE20-02). Once IU Secure is available in your residence, this exception will no longer apply and you will need to remove your WAP from the network. IUPUI: IU Secure is not available at Park Place. AT&T provides high-speed wireless access to Park Place residents.
