ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I install the ArcGIS 9.x License Manager?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

At Indiana University, if you want to install ArcGIS on a laptop or a computer not connected to the IU network, you will need to install the ArcGIS License Manager. This program is included in the ArcGIS Desktop installation files, available for download from IUware. To find out how you can purchase ArcGIS, see ArcGIS availability at IU

Update license with Keyless License Manager

  1. If applicable, uninstall any previous version of ArcGIS License Manager; see ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I uninstall programs? The License Manager for ArcGIS 9.2 and earlier versions will not work with ArcGIS 9.3, as the license component for this application has been updated.
  2. Gather information about your machine. UITS will need to know the physical address and hostname of your machine in order to create a keyless ESRI license. To do this, open a command prompt window. Type ipconfig /all, and then press Enter.
  3. Under Windows IP Configuration, find your hostname. Under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, find your physical address. If there is more than one Ethernet connection listed, use the information from the first one, but be sure not to use information listed for a Wireless Local Area Connection.
  4. Email the GIS Support Specialists group (uitsgis@indiana.edu) to request a license file. Include ArcGIS 9.3 license request in the subject line. In the message body, include your computer's hostname and the 12-character physical address of the Ethernet adapter. If you are unsure which physical address to use, copy the entire output and send it with your license file request.
  5. UITS will request a license file from the ESRI and email the file to you. Once you receive the license file (.txt or .elf), save it to your computer.
  6. Open LMSetupKeyless.exe. The ESRI License Manager setup files are included in the ArcGIS Desktop installation folder (the default location is C:\IUware Online\ArcGIS Desktop 9.3\License). If you do not have the ArcGIS setup files, you can download the license manager from ESRI Support.
  7. The ArcGIS 9 License Manager Setup window will appear. Choose I received the license file by email and have saved it to disk.
  8. Browse to the license file, and then select it and click Next.
  9. Click Next twice, and then click Install.
  10. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer, and then click Finish. Make sure your computer restarts.
  11. To confirm successful installation, open ArcGIS ArcMap. If you see an error message, you may need to update the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator with your machine's hostname; see "ArcGIS on a local license manager with a sentinel key" in Correct the "Cannot find SERVER hostname in network database" error message in ArcGIS at IU

Update license with sentinel key

Note: A sentinel key is a piece of USB hardware. If you do not have one of these issued by UITS, follow the instructions above.

  1. If applicable, uninstall any previous version of ArcGIS License Manager; see ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I uninstall programs? The license manager for ArcGIS 9.2 and earlier versions will not work with ArcGIS 9.3, as the license component for this application has been updated.
  2. Plug in the USB ESRI sentinel key.
  3. Open LMSetup.exe. The ESRI License Manager setup files are included in the ArcGIS Desktop installation folder (the default location is C:\IUware Online\ArcGIS Desktop 9.3\License). If you do not have the ArcGIS setup files, you can download the license manager from ESRI Support.
  4. Select I received the license file by email and have saved it to disk.
  5. Browse to the license file, select it, and then click Open. Click Next to continue.
  6. You will see a summary of the license file. Confirm that the expiration date has not passed, and then click Next.
  7. Click Install.
  8. When installation is complete, you will be asked to restart your computer. After saving your work in any open applications, select Yes, and then click Finish. Make sure that you leave the ESRI sentinel key plugged in while your computer restarts.
  9. After the restart, from the Start menu, open ArcGIS Desktop Administrator.
  10. In the License Manager folder, change the "Not_Set" variable to your computer's hostname; see ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I find my computer's hostname? If you see the message, "The computer you chose is not a valid license server...", you may need to manually start the license service; see "Restart your local license manager service" in Correct the "Cannot find SERVER hostname in network database" error message in ArcGIS at IU
  11. Click OK to close the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator.
  12. Open ArcGIS ArcMap to confirm a successful installation.
