Use the Turnitin external LTI tool in Canvas

On this page:

The Turnitin external LTI tool, one of two Turnitin integrations for Canvas, is designed for instructors who want to take advantage of the grading and feedback tools available in Turnitin Feedback Studio, such as PeerMark, QuickMarks, Turnitin Rubrics, and automated spelling and grammar checking. Grades entered in Feedback Studio are automatically transferred to the Canvas Gradebook.

If you are only interested in using Turnitin's plagiarism detection service, you may find it easier to use the Canvas Plagiarism Framework from Turnitin.

Create a Turnitin assignment in Canvas

To use the Turnitin LTI integration with a Canvas assignment, you will set up the Canvas assignment as an external tool assignment, and then set assignment details in Turnitin. For instructions, see Creating a Turnitin LTI Assignment in Canvas. When selecting the external tool, choose Turnitin from the dropdown menu.

  • For students' papers to be submitted properly, instructors must set the Turnitin options before any students have submitted their work for a given assignment. Papers submitted to Assignments before Turnitin is activated will not be submitted to Turnitin retroactively.
  • Creating Turnitin assignments without a due date is not recommended; if you do not set a due date in Canvas, a due date will be automatically assigned within the Turnitin LTI.
  • Resubmissions are not allowed by default. To allow resubmissions for a TII Turnitin assignment, see Resubmitting on Behalf of a Student.

Access Similarity Reports and the Feedback Studio

To access Similarity Reports and Feedback Studio tools, see Access Similarity Reports. For more, including how to exclude quotes and understand the results, see:

As of December 9, 2018, the Similarity score listed in Canvas may not be correct. To view the correct Similarity score, access the submission's Similarity Report. For more about the issue, see Handling dates.

You can access Feedback Studio grades, feedback, and Similarity Reports (if permitted) for your assignment submissions from the assignment dashboard by clicking the similarity score in the "%" column. (You can also access your similarity score from the Gradebook "Submission Details" screen.) For more, see Viewing the Similarity Report.
