ARCHIVED: How does the Oncourse CL Gradebook calculate course grades?

When setting up a gradebook in Oncourse CL, an instructor decides either to keep the grade type and scale in its default format or modify it. For details, see ARCHIVED: Changing the grade entry, type, and scale in Gradebook.

Once the grade type and scale are set, the instructor creates Gradebook items and assigns each a total value using points or percentages. The instructor can also choose to set up categories, weighted or unweighted, for Gradebook items. For example, using a point-based gradebook, if an instructor creates five items, each worth 10 points, then the total possible points would be 50. If the instructor uses the default grading scale (100, 95, 90, 87, 83, 80, 77, 73, 70, 67, 63, 60, etc.), then a student with 45 out of 50 points would have an A- in the class. The A- is then considered the course grade, and is displayed in the Gradebook (under "Course Grades") for that student.

The autocalculated course grade is based on the number of points earned divided by the number of possible points submitted. If an item is not submitted, the instructor will need to enter a 0 (zero) for that item in order for it to be included in the course grade calculation.
