Error messages when sending email to IU addresses

When sending email to Indiana University email addresses, you may receive the following error messages:

Undeliverable message

If you send email from your IU Exchange account to another IU Exchange user, an undeliverable message will look like the following:

Subject: Undeliverable: [Your subject line]

Body:

Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:

username@iu.edu

The email address you entered couldn't be found. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.

The following organization rejected your message: mssg-relay.indiana.edu.

If you send email from another type of email address (for example, a personal Gmail account) to any IU email account, an undeliverable message may look like this:

Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

Body:

Address not found

Your message wasn't delivered to username@iu.edu because the address couldn't be found, or is unable to receive mail.

These error messages may be caused by any of the following situations:

  • You've entered the person's email address incorrectly. Search the IU Directory for contact information for IU students, faculty, and staff.
  • The person's IU email account has been disabled. As students, faculty, and staff leave IU, their computing accounts are eventually retired. The first step in this process is to disable them before they are actually purged. Check to see if the person appears in the IU Directory; if they do not, and you know the email address is correct, their account may be disabled. If you need to contact someone in the person's IU department, use the departmental listings in the IU Directory.
  • There is an outage or other issue with an IU email system. Check Status.IU for alerts.

Not authorized

All SMTP authentication to mail-relay.iu.edu is restricted and requires prior authorization before being able to send authenticated email. To submit an authorization request, fill out the Mail Relay Authorization form. After your submission is processed, you will be authorized to send authenticated email.
