Important:
Oncourse is retired. For details, see ARCHIVED: About the Oncourse retirement.

As an evaluator, you can use the Evaluations tool to access, review, and evaluate the appropriate matrix cells submitted by participants. You can also add an evaluation from within the Matrices tool; see ARCHIVED: Adding an evaluation in the Matrices tool.

Note:
To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. If you're not sure what your role is, see the "Role" column in the Roster tool. For permissions, see ARCHIVED: What can I do in read-only Oncourse?

Evaluating an entire cell

  1. Log into Oncourse at:
      https://oncourse.iu.edu/
  2. Click the site you wish to enter. If you don't see the correct site listed, click More Sites.
  3. From the menubar, choose Evaluations. A list of matrix cells pending evaluation will appear. If there are more than ten pending items, the items will be grouped into ten per page. Use the Next, Previous, First, and Last buttons to navigate among the pages.

To filter the list by group, choose the group you wish to view in the View drop-down menu, and then click Filter.

The title of each item, submission date, name of the site in which the item resides, and type will be given. The name of the owner of each submission may or may not be visible, depending on the permissions settings for the Evaluations tool.

  4. Click the title of the item you wish to evaluate. The cell will open.
  5. Read any instructions, and review all of the forms, artifacts, and attachments that have been submitted.
  6. In the "Evaluations" area, click Add.
  7. Complete the evaluation form. You may be asked to fill in required fields, submit a grade or ranking, or add a comment.
  8. When you are finished filling in the evaluation form, click Save Changes. To exit without saving your evaluation, click Cancel.
  9. After saving your changes, you will be prompted to choose one of the following workflow options:
    • Set Status to "Complete": Choose this option if no further work is required and the evaluation process is complete. The "Items", "Reflections", and "Evaluations" areas of the cell will be locked.
    • No Changes to Status: Choose this option if you or other evaluators will be adding further evaluations to the cell.
    • Set Status to "Returned": Choose this option to unlock the "Items" and "Reflections" areas of the cell, so the student can revise, delete, or add attachments, forms, and reflections. This option is functionally the same as resetting the cell to "Ready", but uses different color-coding to show the student that the cell has been reviewed and needs further work.

  10. You will be returned to the cell with which you were working. Click Back to Evaluations to return to the Evaluations tool. After an item is evaluated, it is removed from the list of pending evaluations.

Evaluating individual artifacts

  1. Open the Evaluations tool in the site you wish to enter. Then, locate and open the item you wish to evaluate. See steps 1 through 4 in Evaluating an entire cell above for detailed instructions.
  2. Locate the item you wish to evaluate in the "Items" area of the cell. Click Add Evaluation to the right of the item name.

Note: The Add Evaluation link only appears in cells where item-level evaluation has been enabled.

  3. Complete the evaluation form. You may be asked to fill in required fields, submit a grade or rating, and add a comment.
  4. When you are finished filling in the evaluation form, click Save Changes. To exit without saving your evaluation, click Cancel.
  5. You will be returned to the cell with which you were working. Click Back to Evaluations to return to the Evaluations tool. After an item is evaluated, it is removed from the list of pending evaluations.
