Install ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5

To install ArcGIS for Desktop at Indiana University, you first must purchase a license from UITS. To complete the installation, you will need system administrator privileges on the system on which you're installing the software.

To learn more about IU-supported ArcGIS for Desktop product levels and licensing, see Supported ArcGIS Desktop product levels and licenses at IU.

To install ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5:

  1. Download the ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5 installer from IUware to a folder on your local system.
  2. Use an ISO image mounter program (for example, Virtual CloneDrive, MagicDisc) to use the ISO image file as a virtual disk, or use an ISO image extractor program (for example, 7-Zip, IsoBuster) to extract the files from within an ISO image file to disk.
  3. Once the iso file is mounted or extracted, double-click the Esri.exe file to launch the "ArcGIS for Desktop Installer" window.
  4. You can uninstall ArcGIS software previous to ArcGIS 10.1 using the Uninstall utility; see the application help for further details. The ArcGIS 10.5 setup package is designed to install a new installation or detect and upgrade an existing installation of ArcGIS 10.1, 10.2, 10.2.1, 10.2.2, or 10.4 on the target system. The settings for the installation location, license manager (for concurrent use), and authorization information (for single use) are retained in the upgrade. The installation location parent folder is retained, although the upgrade is installed in a 10.5 folder. If you wish to change the installation location, you will need to manually uninstall ArcGIS 10.1 through the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel before installing ArcGIS 10.5 in the new location.
  5. After uninstalling any 10.0 or older ArcGIS for Desktop software, click Setup in the "ArcGIS for Desktop" row of the installer window.
  6. To begin the installation, click Next. The installation may take up to 30 minutes to complete.
  7. When the installation is complete, you will see a screen stating that ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5 was successfully installed. Click Finish.
  8. In the "ArcGIS Administrator Wizard" window, choose either Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use or Basic (ArcView) Concurrent Use. UITS does not support the Standard (ArcEditor) software product level. UITS supports single-use authorization only for systems that are infrequently connected to the IU network and require a local license solution.
  9. Follow the appropriate instructions for the licensing option your system requires:
UITS highly recommends using the Central License Service if your system has stable internet access and can connect to the IU domain.
    • To use the Central License Service, under "License Manager", select Define a License Manager Now:, and then, in the field below, enter;; do not click Browse..;. Click OK.
    • If you use your system outside of the IU network, contact the UITS Research Applications and Deep Learning team to request a single-use provisioning file for the product level you purchased. UITS does not support license borrowing.
  10. Using the ArcGIS for Desktop Installer, install ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop, Background Geoprocessing (64-bit), and/or additional applications as needed:
    • ArcSDE for Desktop Background Geoprocessing (64-bit)
    • ArcSDE for Microsoft SQL Server
    • ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop
    • ArcGIS Data Reviewer for Desktop
    • ArcGIS Workflow Manager for Desktop
    • ArcObjects SDK for Microsoft .NET Framework
    • ArcObjects SDK for Java
  11. Download and install ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5 service packs from Esri Patches and Service Packs for ArcGIS for Desktop.
  12. Check Esri Support Downloads for any new ArcGIS for Desktop 10.5 patches and install them. The bottom of each page includes information about using the Patchfinder utility to identify and verify which patches are installed on your system.
  13. Esri provides a collection of software tutorials in PDF format with directions on performing common tasks in ArcGIS. To use the ArcGIS for Desktop tutorials, you need to install or have write access to the tutorial exercise data; the installer for this data is available from IUware. For more, see Find Esri tutorials at IU.
  14. Esri provides Data and Maps for ArcGIS, a collection of over 110 datasets with metadata. For details, see Access Esri maps and data at IU.
