Install ArcGIS for Desktop at IU

Note:
Esri has announced that ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap and its associated suite of tools, including ArcGlobe, etc.) will no longer be available through the Education Site License beginning July 1, 2024. This means that all current ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) users will need to transition to ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online by June 30, 2024. For further details, see ArcMap Retirement in Education Programs.

To install ArcGIS for Desktop at Indiana University, you need administrator privileges on the workstation on which you're installing the software.

To learn more about IU-supported ArcGIS for Desktop licensing, see ArcGIS availability at IU.

To install ArcGIS for Desktop:

  1. Download the ArcGIS for Desktop installer from IUware.
  2. Use 7-Zip to extract the files if needed.
  3. Go to the directory with the extracted files, double-click Esri.exe to launch the ArcGIS for Desktop installer, and then click Next to begin the installation.
    Note:
The installer is designed to install a new installation or detect and upgrade an existing installation of ArcGIS. For upgrades, the installation location, license manager settings (for concurrent use), and authorization information (for single use) are retained. The installation parent folder is retained, but the upgrade will be installed in a new subdirectory. To change the installation location for an upgrade, you will need to manually uninstall the previous version using the Windows Add/Remove Programs utility before installing the new version in the new location. To uninstall ArcGIS versions previous to 10.1, use the application's Uninstall utility; see the application help for instructions. After uninstalling any ArcGIS versions previous to 10.1, click Setup in the "ArcGIS for Desktop" row of the installer window.
  4. The installation may take up to 30 minutes to complete. When it's finished, you will see a screen notifying you that ArcGIS for Desktop was successfully installed. Click Finish.
  5. In the "ArcGIS Administrator Wizard" window, choose Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use or Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use. UITS does not support the Standard (ArcEditor) software product level. UITS supports single-use authorization only for systems that are infrequently connected to the IU network and require a local license solution.
  6. Follow the appropriate instructions for the licensing option your system requires:
    Note:
UITS highly recommends using the Central License Service if your system has stable internet access and can connect to the IU domain. To run the software using a license managed by the Central License Service, you must be either connected to an IU network on campus, or on the IU VPN if off campus.
    • To use the Central License Service, under "License Manager", select Define a License Manager Now:, and then, in the field below, enter esri1.uits.indiana.edu;esri2.uits.indiana.edu; do not click Browse..;. Click OK.
    • If you use your system outside of the IU network, contact UITS GIS Support to request a single-use provisioning file for the product level you purchased. UITS does not support license borrowing.
  7. Using the ArcGIS for Desktop Installer, install ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop, Background Geoprocessing (64-bit), and/or additional applications as needed:
    • ArcSDE for Desktop Background Geoprocessing (64-bit)
    • ArcSDE for Microsoft SQL Server
    • ArcGIS Data Interoperability for Desktop
    • ArcGIS Data Reviewer for Desktop
    • ArcGIS Workflow Manager for Desktop
    • ArcObjects SDK for Microsoft .NET Framework
    • ArcObjects SDK for Java
  8. Download and install any patches and service packs available from Esri.
  9. Check Esri Support Downloads for any new ArcGIS patches and install them. The bottom of each page includes information about using the Patchfinder utility to identify and verify which patches are installed on your system.
