Hold a conference call or online meeting using Microsoft Teams at IU or Skype for Business

On this page:

Office telephone service for faculty and staff at Indiana University will begin to transition from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams at IU in the first quarter of 2023. UITS encourages all students, faculty, and staff to switch from Skype for Business to Teams for chat now. Faculty and staff should continue to use Skype for Business for external phone calls until migrated to Teams Calls. For more, see About Microsoft Teams Calls at IU.

During the transitional period, you can use either service to communicate with multiple people using audio, instant messaging, or video, with some limitations.

As of December 2, 2022, the New Skype Meeting button is no longer available in Exchange calendars. UITS recommends that meeting organizers begin using Microsoft Teams for scheduled meetings. See below for instructions.

Microsoft Teams at IU

For instructions on using Microsoft Teams, see:

The Teams Meeting button will appear in the Outlook for Mac ribbon if you are running Outlook production build 16.24.414.0 or later, and have activated a Microsoft 365 client subscription.

Skype for Business

For instructions on using Skype for Business, see:

  • If you are initiating calls, you must enter your Authorization Code for any international numbers. If you're using the Skype for Business client with a USB headset or USB phone, you must call each international number individually, and then merge the conversations together. In one of the conversation windows, select the More Options icon ( The More Options icon in Skype for Business looks like three dots ) in Skype for Business, and select the conversation you want to merge into.
  • If you set up a meeting for others to dial into, the primary phone number will be local to your campus. People calling in from the regions of any of IU's other campuses can call a number in that area to join the conference; in the meeting invitation, select Find a local number for the list. Any long-distance charges are the responsibility of the callers. All calls between office phones at any of IU's campuses are free.
