ARCHIVED: E Training for learners

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

E Training at IU offers online and in-person training, tutorials, and compliance-driven education and awareness. It is available free of charge to Indiana University students, faculty, staff, and affiliates for completion of compliance-specific training. E Training keeps comprehensive records of training completion, enabling learners to certify their training and allowing the university to maintain robust compliance records.

E Training is migrating from the platform described below to IU Expand. For more about the new platform, see About IU E Training courses in IU Expand. If you wish to keep your certificates from previous E Training courses, download them before the legacy system is fully retired; see below.

Browser requirements

For the most reliable experience, use Firefox or Internet Explorer (available via IUware); however, on iOS devices, you must use Safari.

If your browser's pop-up blocker is enabled, add an exception for etrain.iu.edu so your courses can be launched.

Note:
UITS strongly recommends that you use a supported browser, and not Internet Explorer (IE). Microsoft 365 apps and services no longer support Internet Explorer.

Accessing E Training

Access E Training from either on or off campus. When you do so for the first time, an account is automatically created for you. Several options will appear on the screen for navigation.

Go to E Training in One.IU, and click Start.

Note:
E Training courses are also available from IU Expand; see About IU E Training courses in IU Expand.

Registering for a course

You can register for any course that an administrator has made open for self-enrollment; such courses will appear in the course catalog. Some courses may require administrator approval before you can register. You will be informed via email of administrator approval or denial of your registration request.

Courses are organized by the campus to which the material pertains. University-wide materials are relevant for departments that serve a university-wide function (e.g., Human Resources or Research Administration). Each campus folder contains another level of categories describing the area providing the materials; typically, this is a department or functional area name.

To register for a course:

  1. Open the course catalog by selecting Catalog, and then browse the available options.
  2. Select a course that interests you, and then, in the "Course Enrollment" dialog box, click ENROLL.

If enrollment is successful, you will receive a confirmation message in email. In E Training, you should see the new course listed in My Courses.

If you have trouble locating the materials you need, contact the course administrator for that training.

Re-enrolling in a course

Some courses are designed for re-enrollment, which means you can re-enroll in a particular course when the certificate is close to expiration (typically 60 days, but this varies by course).

You can open and review a course that allows re-enrollment as often as you like, but unless you re-enroll and then complete the course, your completion record will not be updated.

To re-enroll in a course:

  1. Open the course catalog by selecting Catalog, and then browse through the folder structure to find the course in which you'd like to re-enroll.
    Note:
If you search the catalog, you will not see the option to re-enroll.
  2. Next to the desired course, select Re-enroll.

Taking a course

To begin work on an E Training course:

  1. On the E Training dashboard, click My Courses. Alternatively, from the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner, click Courses.
  2. At the top, to the right of "My Courses", click the List View icon.
  3. To open a particular course, click its name (or Open).
  4. To begin working on a section, click its name (or Launch).
    Note:
If your browser's pop-up blocker is enabled, to proceed you must add an exception for etrain.iu.edu, permitting E Train to open pop-up windows.

You should work through sections in the order listed. Some courses may have rules preventing progression through materials without prerequisite courses.

Quizzes or surveys may be embedded within a lesson or may appear as separate items on the course outline, depending on how course administrators structure the course. Some quizzes have a minimum score required to continue with the course. In addition, some quizzes may have a maximum number of attempts allowed. Before you begin a quiz, a message will pop up indicating the maximum number of attempts allowed.

Course administrators have the option to randomize quiz questions and answers, so all those enrolled in a particular course may not always take the same quiz. Some courses may also require an attestation from you, either agreeing to a set of terms and conditions and/or confirming that you read and understood training materials.

A course is complete when all items in the outline are completed, and all tabs have been viewed. Tabs may include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluations
  • Discussion boards
  • Resources

Enrollment keys

Enrollment keys allow you to enroll in a "bundle" of courses at the same time. They are provided by a course administrator, and contain a key name and password.

If an administrator has given you an enrollment key, click Enrollment Key from the dashboard or from the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner. Enter the key name and password, and you will be automatically enrolled in a group of classes, as determined by the course administrator.

Instructor-Led Training sessions (ILTs)

Instructor-Led Training sessions (ILTs) are in-person courses in which instructors will track attendance and may record an exam grade.

When you register for an ILT, you'll need to choose which session you'd like to attend. If a session is full, you may be placed on a wait list, provided the course administrator has enabled that feature.

If you are placed on a wait list, you will be notified no less than 24 hours prior to the start of the session whether you will be enrolled in it. To allow for adequate planning and scheduling, if a space opens up less than 24 hours before a session starts, this will not result in the enrollment of someone from the wait list.

If you miss your scheduled in-person session and need to register for a new session, you will not be able to do so until the course manager has marked you as absent for the original session.

Resources

To view policies, procedures, and best practices chosen by administrators from across the university, from the E Training dashboard or the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner, click Resources.

When a course administrator chooses to make a resource available to all learners, it will appear in Resources. Additional resources specific to one or more of your courses also may be listed here.

Resources are organized in the same way as courses listed in the course catalog; see Registering for a course above.

Transcripts and certificates

In some courses (determined by course administrators), you will earn a certificate upon completion. Your certificates appear on the "Transcript" page. Access this section from the E Training dashboard, or by selecting Transcript from the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner. Click a certificate to view and print or save it.

Calendar

Any Instructor-Led Training sessions (ILTs) in which you have enrolled appear on the "Calendar" page, provided the course administrator has added the course to the calendar.

Note:
When you enroll in an ILT course, you will receive email with an .ics attachment that will automatically add the course to your personal email calendar. Because of this, most instructors have opted not to use the Calendar feature of E Training.

Message Board

To view messages about the completion of courses, click Message Board from the dashboard or select Messages from the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner. Messages will remain on the message board until you delete them; to do so, click Delete in the upper-right corner of the message.

Help

For help, contact your campus Support Center.

Note:
In general, a new version of E Training will be released every year. Minor changes may be made on a more frequent basis as bugs are fixed and new features are made available. Any major changes will be posted.
