About VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a learning tool for enhancing student engagement and online presence. With VoiceThread, instructors and/or students can create, share, and comment on images, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, videos, audio files, documents, and PDFs, using microphone, webcam, text, phone, and audio-file upload. At Indiana University, VoiceThread is an external tool that integrates into Canvas.

VoiceThread also has iOS and Android apps for accessing VoiceThreads in Canvas courses; for instructions, see Sign into VoiceThread mobile apps.

You can add VoiceThread to the same course multiple times. For example, if you want to link directly to three different VoiceThreads in your course, add three separate VoiceThread placements, one for each thread.

Browser requirements

• VoiceThread is supported in full in:
  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Safari (version 14 or later, packaged with MacOS Big Sur)
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Opera
  • Brave
• For the best possible experience, your web browser should be fully up to date, but at minimum no more than two versions behind.

Add to a Canvas assignment

To create a graded assignment in VoiceThread, you'll need to create a Canvas assignment that uses an external tool as the submission type. To do so:

1. Log into Canvas, and navigate to your course.

2. From the course navigation menu, choose Assignments.
3. To create a new assignment, select +Assignment.
4. Name the assignment, and write a description or instructions if you wish.
5. Under "Submission Type", select External Tool.
6. Click in the text field below the external tool URL.
7. From the list of external tools, select VoiceThread.
8. To save your changes, choose Update Assignment.

Add to a Canvas module or course navigation

To add VoiceThread to a Canvas module, follow the instructions in How do I add an external tool as a module item? Be sure to select the tool named VoiceThread and, in the "Page Name" field, enter a descriptive name for your VoiceThread activity.
