ARCHIVED: Adding external tools to your course in Canvas

Indiana University has installed some external tools globally in Canvas, which means they can be used in any Canvas course. Some will show up in your course navigation by default, but others must be added to your course manually. To add an external tool to your course:

1. Open the Modules tool, and either create a new module or edit an existing module.
2. Add a content item to the module, and select External Tool.
3. Select the desired LTI tool from the list.
   Note:

   If the tool you want is not listed, you can request that it be added; see Requesting non-whitelisted apps using local configuration.
4. If desired, check Load this tool in a new tab.
5. Click Add item to save.
6. Click the Publish icon to the right of the LTI tool link.
7. If the module is not yet published, click the Publish icon to the right of the module title.
8. Click the link for the app to test the integration.

If you also want the tool to appear in the course navigation:

1. In the Modules tool, right-click the link for the tool you just added, and copy the link address.
2. Open the Settings tool, and then click Apps.
3. In the Apps tab, search for the Redirect tool.
4. Open the Redirect tool and click Add Tool.
5. In the "Add App" dialog:
   1. In the "Name" field, enter the name of the tool as you'd like it to appear in the course navigation.
   2. In the "URL Redirect" field, paste the URL you copied from the Modules tool.
   3. Check Show in Course Navigation.
   4. Click Submit.
6. To see the link in the course navigation, refresh the page; click the link to test it.
   Note:

   If you don't plan to use the Modules tool for organizing course content and activities, and you'd prefer students to use the app link in the course navigation, you can hide the Modules tool; see How do I reorder and hide Course Navigation links? from the Canvas Help Center.
