About ASL interpretation in Zoom at IU

On this page:

Overview

At Indiana University, you have several options for American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, whether you require these services or wish to provide them for an event you are hosting.

Arrange accommodations

Note:

If you are a student who requires accommodation, you should first register with your campus Accessible Educational Services (AES) office. Once you are registered, the office will assist in arranging accommodation.

For non-academic accommodation requests, departments hosting events may arrange and pay for interpreting services. You may use any vendor. If you do not have a vendor in mind, the AES office at your campus can recommend a local vendor.

Manage interpreters in Zoom

During Zoom meetings, the interpreter will appear as a regular participant. Other participants who want to view interpretation need to pin the video to keep the interpreter visible.

During Zoom webinars, the interpreter should be invited as a panelist (or promoted to panelist) so the interpreter can enable video. Hosts may want to set the video layout for attendees to Gallery View so attendees can see both the speaker and the interpreter. Further consideration of the meeting host's view may be needed if a recording of the meeting must include the interpretation.
