Use an Esri Student License to authorize ArcGIS Desktop
Note:
Esri has announced that ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap and its associated suite of tools, including ArcGlobe, etc.) will no longer be available through the Education Site License beginning July 1, 2024. This means that all current ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap) users will need to transition to ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online by June 30, 2024. For further details, see ArcMap Retirement in Education Programs.
After installing ArcGIS Desktop on your computer, students need to authorize the software using the license file provided through IUware:
- Save the license file from IUware to your computer.
- Launch the Software Authorization Wizard from ArcGIS Administrator.
- Select .
- Browse to the license file you saved, and click Note:If the license file is not displayed when you navigate to it through the Authorization Wizard, browse to the file on your computer instead and double-click the file. This will launch the authorization.

- Review the pre-populated personal information, and enter any additional required information. On the next panels, you will see the authorization numbers entered for the core product and any extensions, if applicable.
- To complete the authorization process, click .
Note:
If your software gives you an authorization error when you launch it after activating your license file, check the version of the software and the licensing type in ArcGIS Administrator using the steps below.
- From the menu, select . Right-click and choose .
- In the "ArcGIS Administrator" window, select the folder.
- Confirm that is selected. If it is not, choose that option. Select , and then .
- Launch the software again to see if the error has cleared.
