Use your IU REDCap project as a data source in Tableau

To use your IU REDCap project as a data source in Tableau:

  1. Request an IU REDCap API token.
  2. Find the web data connector (WDC) URL for your REDCap project:
    1. Navigate to your IU REDCap project, and then, in the left navigation column, select Data Exports, Reports, and Stats.
    2. On the resulting page, select the Other Export options tab. In the "Tableau Export: Extract all records into Tableau via the REDCap API" section, select View export instructions. You should see a pop-up displaying a URL that you will use in the following steps to set up a WDC in Tableau.
  3. In Tableau, under "To a Server", select More, and then select Web Data Connector.
  4. In the "Web Data Connector" dialog box, enter the WDC URL for your IU REDCap project, and then press Enter.
  5. In the "Tableau Web Data Connector for REDCap" dialog box, enter your IU REDCap API token, choose whether you want to receive data as raw variables or as labels, and then select Submit.
Important:

If the IU REDCap project data you are accessing contain protected health information (PHI), you must treat your Tableau workbook file as PHI, which means the file must be encrypted when it is stored (that is, at rest) and when it is transferred from one computer to another (that is, in transit).
