The ARCHIVED: Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System (IHETS) has decided to retire its SUVON service in order to re-focus its mission and change the number and kinds of telecommunication and e-learning services it provides. To ensure proper call routing, UITS discontinued SUVON access as of May 29, 2008.

SUVON was a private state voice network that provided long distance calling to faculty and staff at more than 75 universities, colleges, and K-12 institutions throughout Indiana at no charge to the caller; the retirement of the service affects all of these institutions. All fees associated with Indiana University's use of the SUVON network were funded by University Information Technology Services (UITS).

Traditionally, to access SUVON at IU Bloomington or IUPUI, you would dial 16 plus the area code and seven-digit telephone number. Additionally, at IUB, direct-dialed calls (9+1+area code+number) were routed via SUVON, when possible, to avoid unnecessary long distance charges. You might also have been using SUVON without realizing it if your speed dialing or fax auto-dial settings used the 16 prefix.

Starting May 29, 2008, 16 access code dialing is no longer available. All calls that previously used SUVON will be routed via IU's long distance provider, meaning that long distance charges will apply to calls previously carried on the SUVON network.

In an effort to minimize the impact to departmental budgets, UITS has made two changes for faculty, staff, and departmental accounts, effective June 1, 2008:

  • All calls made on the IUB or IUPUI campus to any other IU campus are free of charge. You must use 10-digit dialing (9+1+area code+number) and an authorization code, but campus-to-campus calls will be billed at a $0.00 rate.

Note: From an office phone, you can call between IUB and IUPUI with no charge by dialing the last five digits of the number (e.g., 5-1234); the SUVON retirement does not affect this type of call.

  • All domestic long distance calls (in state and out of state) will be billed at a reduced rate of $0.07 per minute for the first 60 seconds of the call and in 15-second increments thereafter. Your July 1, 2008, billing statement will reflect this rate reduction and incremental billing change.

To help you plan for SUVON's discontinuation, UITS will provide a summary of your unit's past eight to twelve months of SUVON calls, estimating the costs for those calls at the reduced long distance rates. To obtain this report, contact commreq@iu.edu. You can also run a report from within the IUIE to estimate your costs; see ARCHIVED: At IU, how can I calculate the financial impact of the SUVON retirement for my telephone accounts?
