ARCHIVED: Maximum upload file size for IU Box

Important:

IU's Box cloud storage service was retired on May 10, 2021. For information about cloud storage options available at IU, see Storage at IU.

Note:
Free Box accounts, available to the public, are not related to the enterprise Box service at Indiana University; see ARCHIVED: Compare IU and personal (non-IU) Box accounts.

Although your overall IU Box account storage quota is unlimited, the maximum file size for uploading an individual file is 15 GB. The size limit is the same whether you use a web browser (that is, the Upload Files or Upload Folders feature), Box Sync, or Box Edit to upload your file.

You should not upload more than one file larger than 5 GB at a time.

Notes:
  • When uploading a file larger than 5 GB, a business-class internet connection with upload and download speeds of 50 Mbps is required; a 10 GB file will take around 30 minutes to upload.
  • Large file uploads to Box cannot be paused and then resumed. If there is an error in the uploading process, you will need to attempt the upload again. For more about resolving upload errors, see Box's Troubleshooting: Uploads.
  • Internet Explorer has a limit of 4 GB per file. This is a ARCHIVED: known issue. The limit does not apply if you are using the Upload Folders option. UITS strongly recommends that you use a supported browser, and not Internet Explorer (IE). Microsoft 365 apps and services no longer support Internet Explorer.
