Changes in Box at IU

Box cloud storage will be retired at Indiana University in spring 2021. Migration of IU's Box data began in June 2020. For details about cloud storage options at IU, see Storage @ IU.

After your files are migrated from Box, the Box versions become read-only. Migrations will be finished by March 2021, and access to Box will be terminated in May 2021.

Box releases new features and retires old ones on a regular basis. For information about feature changes, see:

Known issues with Box at IU

Following is continually updated information about the status of known university-wide Box issues.

Issue Description Status Last updated
Bulk download from the Box website has a limit of 15 GB
If you choose to download a folder or folders containing over 15 GB of data, Box will download a single ZIP file, but it will not contain all of the data you selected. Box does not warn you that it is too much data and it does not notify you that the download does not contain all of your selected data.
The issue has been reported to the vendor. The limit of 15 GB for the download is not considered a bug. The lack of error message is being investigated. For full details on issues around downloads in Box, see Common Issues with Downloading Files.

Some browsers prompt users to install Box Edit again
Google Chrome and other 64-bit browsers, such as some versions of Internet Explorer, do not recognize the old Box Edit plug-in.

  1. Download the latest version of Box Edit for your operating system from Box's Desktop Apps.
  2. Run the installer.
  3. Clear your browser's cookies; see Clear your web browser's cache, cookies, and history.
  4. Restart your browser.

Browser limitation with large file upload

IE has a limit of 4 GB per file. These limits do not apply if using the Java (Upload Folders) uploader.

UITS strongly recommends that you use a supported browser, and not Internet Explorer (IE). IE 11, the last major version, no longer supports Microsoft Teams, and will stop supporting Microsoft 365 apps in August, 2021.
No time estimate exists for resolving the issue.

File creation date
Box overwrites the original file creation date when you upload a file.
Box has corrected this through most entry points. Details at Understanding Box File Timestamps.

Drag and drop folders
Users can drag and drop single files into Box via any supported browser. Drag and drop of entire folders works best with Chrome. In Firefox, dragging and dropping folders may also upload unwanted temporary files. This feature is not available in Internet Explorer.
Users of other browsers can use the bulk upload feature under the Upload menu. For documentation, see Upload to Box.
