ARCHIVED: About creating a first IU email account for admitted or returning students who have an IU username and passphrase
These instructions are for any new or returning student who meets the following criteria:
- You have been admitted to the university and to the appropriate school within the university.
- You have an IU username and passphrase.
- You have not yet created your IU email account.
Note: If you already have an active IU email account associated with your IU username, and you wish to create an additional IU email account (such as an employee email account), instead see Get additional IU computing accounts
To create your first IU email account:
Note: For the AMS, use a web browser capable of making a secure connection (one that supports SSL), such as the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari, and be sure you are able to accept cookies.
Allow yourself 10 to 15 minutes to complete the account creation process. Your session will time out if left inactive for more than five consecutive minutes, requiring that you log in and begin the process again.
- Go to the Account Management Service Starter Kit.
- Enter your last name, date of birth, and University ID number in the fields provided. Click .
- The AMS will display the Guidelines for Appropriate Usage, which
are rules and policies for IT account use at IU. After you have read
the Guidelines, enter

to agree to these policies, and then click .Note: If you see an error message that begins, "According to our records you currently have accounts at IU and are not eligible to create more at this time...", you need to use a different AMS tool to continue. Follow the instructions in Get additional IU computing accounts
- From the available options, select where you want to receive
your IU email. Most students can choose a Umail account
(Google). If your school requires you to use a different type of
account, that option will be available for you to select.
Note:UITS no longer allows the creation of Imail accounts, in anticipation of its retirement.

. - Click if you want to print a copy of your account information. To end your AMS session and close your browser, click .
If you encounter a problem with the account creation process, copy the full text of any error message and contact your campus Support Center.
