Rename an IU List mailing list

Overview

Important:
Indiana University will be transitioning to a single email domain, iu.edu, between now and the end of 2025. For more about the transition, see One Mail. For details about the impact to IU List specifically, see Changes to IU List from the One Mail initiative. For general actions you may need to take, see Prepare for One Mail at IU.

As part of the One Mail project, all owners of IU List mailing lists on campus-specific domains will need to migrate those lists to the IU domain as described below, effectively renaming the list from listname-l@campus.edu to listname-l@iu.edu. If your list is already on the iu.edu domain, you may change the listname if you wish.

Note:
Only a privileged owner with a valid University account can perform the following actions; see Create an IU List mailing list.
Note:
If your list is a sublist of another list, or if your list has one or more sublists, contact the IU List administrators at list-admin@iu.edu to rename or migrate the list. The list admin will have to break the sublist connection, rename the list, and then re-establish the sublist connection.

If your list is on a campus-specific domain

If your IU List mailing list is not yet on the iu.edu domain:

  1. Before you begin, make sure that you are listed as a list owner with your iu.edu email address. Follow the instructions in Add or remove an owner or moderator on an IU List mailing list to view the "Owners" page on the IU List web interface for your list; if your campus domain email address is listed, add yourself again under your iu.edu email address. (Be sure you add yourself as a privileged owner.)
  2. Visit the IU List Migration Tool.
  3. Next to "Select the list to rename:", select the name of a list, and then choose Migrate.
  4. You'll see a confirmation page with an option to return to the migration page to migrate other lists.
Notes:
  • Although email sent to listname-l@list.iu.edu should work immediately following the migration, it may take up to 30 minutes before email sent to listname-l@iu.edu forwards properly.
  • Be sure to communicate the listname change to anyone who sends messages to the list or uses the administrative or self-service functions. For details about what the change will mean for interacting with the list, see Changes to IU List from the One Mail initiative.

If your list is on the iu.edu domain

If your mailing list is already on the iu.edu domain, you can rename it as follows:

  1. Go to IU Mailing Lists.
  2. Log in with a valid University account.
  3. Go to your mailing list's home page; to do so, either select Search to look up your list, or select My lists to see all of the lists for which you are a subscriber or manager.
  4. On your mailing list's home page, in the vertical menu on the left, select Admin.
  5. Under "Drastic operations", select Rename List.
  6. Enter the new name for the list, and make sure the new name ends with "-l". Select Rename this list.
