Migrate files from Google My Drive to Microsoft OneDrive using Microsoft's Mover.io

On this page:

Before you begin

If you need to migrate your Google at IU My Drive data because of changes to Google Storage and the new 5 GB quota, you can use Mover.io, a tool from Microsoft, to migrate all or a select number of your Google at IU My Drive files to Microsoft OneDrive at IU.

If you wish to manually migrate data instead, see Migrate content manually from Google to Microsoft storage.

To view your total Google at IU usage, go to https://drive.google.com/settings/storage. Be sure you are logged into your Google at IU account, and not a personal Google account. To be sure, you could use a private browser.

Important:
  • This method will not migrate any sharing information for your files or folders. After your migration is complete, you'll need to reshare files or folders with any users (internal or external to IU) that were shared in Google.

UITS strongly recommends that you download your data before starting your Mover.io migration. Learn more at Google at IU "My Drive" Shared Files Report.

  • This method will not migrate files larger than 15 GB or files with a size of 0 bytes; for more about unsupported files, see Mover Microsoft 365 Migration FAQ.
  • Migrating your data via Mover.io does not delete your Google My Drive data; thus, after you've migrated your data and reshared any needed files, you must then delete that data from your Google My Drive. This is particularly important if you're over the 5 GB storage limit in Google, so that you'll be under the limit and not lose access to Google My Drive. Additionally, deleting your Google data after migration is important so that your collaborators won't edit Google versions of your files.

Log into Mover.io

  1. Launch https://app.mover.io/.
  2. Choose Log in with Microsoft. Log in with your username@iu.edu email address, even if your primary email domain is campus-specific. Choose Next.
  3. Enter your IU passphrase, and continue to follow the prompts to complete your login.

Connect your data source

  1. Under Step 1, select the Authorize New Connector button.
  2. Select the Authorize button next to "Google Drive (Single User)".
  3. Name your Google Drive Connector, and then select Authorize.
  4. Log into your Google account using your username@iu.edu email address and your IU passphrase, following necessary prompts to complete your login.
  5. To give Mover.io access to your Google at IU My Drive, select Allow.

By default, Mover.io will list all your Google My Drive files and folders. If you prefer to migrate selected folders or files, select them from the list.

Connect your data destination

  1. In the "Step:2 Select destination" section, select Authorize New Connector.
  2. In the list of services under "Authorize Destination Connector", select OneDrive for Business (Single User).
  3. Name your OneDrive Connector, and then select Authorize.
  4. Log into your IU Microsoft account using your username@iu.edu email address, even if your primary email domain is campus-specific. Select Next.
  5. Enter your IU passphrase, choose Sign in, and continue to follow the prompts to complete your login. Mover.io will list all existing folders in your OneDrive account.
  6. Select Create Folder and choose a name such as From Google My Drive as your migration folder destination.

Once selected, Mover.io will display this folder as your data destination.

Migrate your files

Navigate to the "Step3: Start transferring" section of Mover.io. To initiate your migration, select Start Copy.

  • You can follow the progress of their migration in Mover.io on the screen, or leave and come back once the migration is complete.
  • Find your migration data at any time by logging into Mover.io and selecting Migration Manager at the top.
  • If you'd like to view logs, select a migration job, then User Actions, and then Download logs for 1 Transfer (zip file).
  • If you're migrating multiple folders by selection, you can start another migration by selecting Transfer Wizard near the top of the screen and restarting the Mover.10 migration process.

Move institutional data

When your data has been copied to Microsoft OneDrive:

  1. Determine whether you have institutional files there.
  2. If that's the case, you need to move them from Microsoft OneDrive to an institutional location within the Microsoft environment.

Confirm and delete data in Google

Note:
To reduce your storage in Google, you must delete your files from the Trash, or wait 30 days for it to be automatically deleted. Performing your migrations early will allow you to wait the full 30 days after migrating your data, to verify there were no issues post-migration.

After verifying that all data has been copied to the new storage location, be sure to re-add any collaborations that existed in Google My Drive to the files in Microsoft storage. Do this before deleting the data in Google My Drive.

If you downloaded your data before migration, you can use that to reestablish your shares in Microsoft OneDrive or Microsoft Teams at IU.

  • OneDrive: Navigate to the folder location at office.iu.edu and select OneDrive. Right-click the appropriate folder or file, choose Manage Access, and then add necessary permissions.
  • Microsoft Teams: If you wish to grant access to the entire Microsoft Teams site, add others as members of that team. Alternatively, follow the process above to add users to files or folders directly.

Then, delete your data from Google My Drive.
