About the Indiana Spatial Data Portal

On this page:

Overview

The Indiana Spatial Data Portal ( ISDP) provides access to Indiana geospatial data. These datasets are available to the public for download and have no use restrictions. Indiana University's high performance networks and computing infrastructure support the ISDP, which archives and provides web access to imagery provided by data partners within and outside IU. The data largely comes from state and local government imagery initiatives, including the statewide imaging projects managed since 2005 by the Indiana Geographic Information Office (IGIO), which have generated orthophotos and LiDAR imagery of the entire state.

System access

All of the data in the ISDP is available to IU researchers and the general public. The ISDP is integrated with IU Login to manage authentication. IU students, faculty, staff, and affiliates can log in to ISDP using their IU username and passphrase. All others can create an IU guest account to access the system.

Download data

Logged in users can browse and search the collections in the ISDP. Most collections can be searched using a variety of metadata, including year, data type, county, and USGS quadrangle. Items within a collection (including metadata) can be downloaded by clicking on the link on the item page. This initiates an asynchronous job on a server that retrieves the archive file, and then notifies you via email when the file is ready to download.

The ISDP's My Downloads tab lists all your download requests, including their statuses and download links (if available). Downloads are available for 24 hours after a request is completed; downloads that are no longer available will no longer appear on the My Downloads tab.

The ISDP is integrated with the IU Scholarly Data Archive (SDA), which provides long-term, disaster-tolerant data archival and distribution capabilities to petabytes of IU data. Because the SDA employs both disk- and tape-based storage, there may be a delay between the time you request the download and the time the file is ready to download; depending on the size of the file, this delay could range in length from a few minutes to several hours while the SDA's robotic tape drive locates and mounts the tape(s) storing the requested file, and then transfers the data from to disk.

Acknowledge grant support

The Indiana University cyberinfrastructure, managed by the Research Technologies division of UITS, is supported by funding from several grants, each of which requires you to acknowledge its support in all presentations and published works stemming from research it has helped to fund. Conscientious acknowledgment of support from past grants also enhances the chances of IU's research community securing funding from grants in the future. For the acknowledgment statement(s) required for scholarly printed works, web pages, talks, online publications, and other presentations that make use of this and/or other grant-funded systems at IU, see Sources of funding to acknowledge in published work if you use IU's research cyberinfrastructure.

Support

The ISDP is managed by UITS Research Data Services (RDS). If you have questions or need help, complete the GIS Help form.
