Dealing with your Office 365 account when you leave IU

At Indiana University, eligibility for computing accounts depends on your status as a student or employee:

IU Office 365 accounts remain disabled for 30 days, and then are deleted. For more about account lifecycles, see Lifecycle of typical computing accounts from creation to deletion.

Access to applications installed from Office 365

Applications installed and activated using your IU Office 365 account are available for your use as long as you have an IU Office 365 account. Once your IU Office 365 account becomes inactive you will have approximately 90 days to acquire and switch your subscription to a new Office 365 account.

Access to OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online

Once your IU Office 365 account becomes inactive you will no longer have access to your OneDrive for Business account. In addition, you will not have access to shared documents on any other IU Office 365 account owner's OneDrive for Business account or any IU SharePoint Online site.

  • Personal data: Copy the data you want to retain on your OneDrive for Business account before your IU Office 365 account becomes inactive to any location of your choice.
  • Institutional and collaborative data: Make sure you provide the data on your OneDrive for Business account to whoever needs it before your IU Office 365 account becomes inactive.
Important:
OneDrive for Business is only approved for public and university-internal data. For sharing institutional and collaborative data, UITS recommends using Box instead of OneDrive for Business.
