What it does

The Podcasts tool allows site leaders to store and distribute multimedia content to site participants. Participants may download material manually or via an RSS feed. Content can take many different forms, including audio lectures, video presentations, and slideshow presentations.

Key concepts

Subscription: Site participants can download podcasts individually or subscribe to an RSS feed, which allows podcasts to be downloaded automatically to a podcatcher.

File types: Several different file types are supported within a podcast, including .mp3, .mp4, and .ppt.

Adding the Podcasts tool: You can add the Podcasts tool to your site using Site Setup; see ARCHIVED: Adding, removing, hiding, or reordering tools.

Things to consider

  • You can download and view or listen to podcasts on most computers. You do not need to own an iPod to consume podcasts.
  • Indiana University students, faculty, and staff can download podcatcher software (i.e., iTunes) free of charge from IUware.
  • Podcasts that you post on your site are stored in Resources.

The quota for a course, project, or portfolio site is 4 GB; the quota for My Workspace is 1 GB. You can upload files up to 500 MB in the Podcasts tool. Note that the maximum file size is 200 MB in other tools (e.g., Resources); to upload a larger file, you must use the Podcasts tool (for files up to 500 MB) or WebDAV. To request a larger quota for your site, see Default storage space allotments for UITS accounts To check your site quota and usage, in the Resources tool, click Check Quota.
