Overview

During the ARCHIVED: Box migration process, the SkySync application will check to see if there are any changes between the source files in Box and files migrated to either Microsoft Storage or Google Storage. The timeline for migration is short, so SkySync will only check for a limited number of changes before it closes the migration window for a particular folder.

Since only a limited number of file comparisons take place, it is best for you and your colleagues to limit or abstain from editing files in Box during the folder migration. If your group uses one or many files stored in Box on a daily basis, you may wish to manually migrate those files to avoid interruptions to daily work and lower the potential for lost data during the Box institutional files migration.

Note:
Before manually migrating data, determine whether you need to migrate it to institutional or individual storage; for help, see Identify the type of files you're storing.

Considerations for manual migration

See below for key differences between migrating content using SkySync and migrating content manually.

SkySync migration Manual migration
Maintains Box collaboration permissions
Yes; see ARCHIVED: Known issues with the Box migration at IU. No
Converts Box Notes to Microsoft Word documents during migration
Yes; see ARCHIVED: Known issues with the Box migration at IU. No
Checks for changes between migrated files and Box files

Manually migrating allows you to start with a fresh set of collaboration permissions in either Microsoft Storage or Google Storage. Manually migrating Box Notes allows you to have full control over their formatting and file type in either Microsoft Storage or Google Storage.

Manual migration process

Important:
The process for manually migrating from Box is bandwidth intensive. You should therefore only attempt to manually migrate from a campus location or by using an IUanyWare desktop. For details about how to connect to IUanyWare and use a desktop, see Set up and use IUanyWare.

You can manually migrate your files from Box using IUanyWare or your computer.

Migrate to Microsoft Storage or Google Storage using IUanyWare

Prerequisites

Process

To manually migrate content using IUanyWare:

  1. Log into IUanyWare.
  2. In the navigation at the top of the IUanyWare interface, click DESKTOPS.
  3. Launch the IUanyWare Desktop.
  4. In the IUanyWare Desktop, open a web browser and log into the Box account containing the files you want to move.
  5. Download the folder you want to manually migrate.
  6. Unzip the folder to the desktop on IUanyWare.
  7. In a different browser, log into the destination Microsoft Storage or Google Storage space.
  8. Upload the unzipped folder to the destination storage space.

  6. Locate any Box Notes you want to migrate and recreate them in Microsoft Storage.
  7. Locate any bookmarks in Box you want to migrate and recreate them in Microsoft Storage.

Migrate to Google Storage using your computer

Prerequisites

Process

To migrate Box files to Google Storage using your computer:

  1. Log into Box Drive with the account containing the files you want to move.

Resolve "filename too long" errors

Sometimes a folder path in Box exceeds your operating system's file path length limit. In such a case, you'll see an error when extracting a file or attempting to move from Box Drive to your new storage destination. You'll have to resolve this error to be able to unzip and upload files to Microsoft Storage or Google Storage.

If you get a "filename too long" error:

  1. In Box, navigate to the folder you attempted to extract or move.
  2. Attempt to move or download a subfolder of the folder that caused the error.
  3. If you downloaded the folder from Box, attempt to extract the folder.

You may need to repeat this process several times until you are moving files that have filenames short enough for the storage destination.
