About Duo telephony features

On this page:

Overview

Indiana University implemented Duo Universal Prompt on July 12, 2022. This change greatly limits using phone call and SMS functions for logging into Two-Step Login (Duo). Only those who have a special exception to use Duo telephony features can use the SMS or phone instructions below; if you don't have such an exception, see Help for Two-Step Login (Duo).

Landline

Note:
Due to security concerns, the University Information Security Office (UISO) strongly recommends that you do not use your office phone.

You can complete a two-step login with Duo by receiving a phone call. Standard phone call rates apply.

If you are using a Duo token alongside a landline phone number, the prompt for the Duo token will be called a bypass code.

To see how this works, view a video about using a simple cell phone or landline with Two-Step Login (Duo).

  1. In the Duo Control Panel, choose Start setup.
  2. Select Landline, and choose Continue.
  3. Enter your landline phone number. Verify that it's correct, and choose Continue.
  4. The Duo Control Panel will refresh with the "My Settings & Devices" page, where your newly added device should be listed.

Cell (simple) phone

You can two-step with Duo by receiving a phone call and text message (SMS) passcodes. Standard phone call and text messaging rates apply.

To see how this works, view a video about using a simple cell phone or landline with Two-Step Login (Duo).

  1. In the Duo Control Panel, choose Start setup.
  2. Select Mobile phone, and choose Continue.
  3. Enter your cell phone number. Verify that it's correct, and choose Continue.
  4. Select Other (and cell phones), and choose Continue.
  5. The Duo Control Panel will refresh with the "My Settings & Devices" page, where your newly added device should be listed.

Google Voice phone number

Note:
You should only enroll a Google Voice phone number when all other options are not possible for you. Then refer to About Google Voice with Two-Step Login (Duo).

About international phone numbers

Indiana University's Two-Step Login (Duo) currently cannot send phone calls or text messages to phone numbers outside the US and Canada. As a result, call- and text-based options for Two-Step Login (Duo) will not work if your smartphone does not have a US or Canadian phone number.

To use IU's Two-Step Login (Duo) with a smartphone that has a phone number from outside the US and Canada, you must enroll it as a tablet using the Smartphone without using a phone number instructions in Get started with Two-Step Login (Duo) at IU.

Note:
Enrolling your device as a tablet (using the instructions at the link above) is the only option that will work if your smartphone does not have a US or Canadian phone number. The options for enrolling a cell (simple) phone, landline, or Google Voice phone number will not let you enter a phone number from outside the US and Canada; however, the option for enrolling a smartphone (with a phone number) will let you enter a phone number from outside the US and Canada, and as a result can give you the impression that your smartphone is successfully set up to receive calls or texts from Duo when it is not.
