About Microsoft 365 at IU
Overview
Microsoft 365 is a subscription-based service that allows IU students, faculty, and staff to use the newest versions of Microsoft software on their personal Windows and macOS computers, on the web, and on smartphones and tablets with mobile apps. Your IU Microsoft 365 subscription allows you to install the software on up to five personal computers (Windows and macOS), five tablets (Windows, iPad, and Android), and five phones. You can use the software as long as your IU computing accounts are active; you are not entitled to use the software after you leave IU.
Features
Microsoft 365 includes:
- Apps for Windows and macOS: The newest desktop versions of the Microsoft 365 suite
- Mobile apps: Scaled-down, touch-optimized versions of Microsoft 365 for your smartphone or tablet
- Microsoft 365 on the web: Cloud-based versions of popular Microsoft 365 apps
- Microsoft OneDrive at IU: Personal cloud storage; for more, see About Microsoft OneDrive at IU.
Access Microsoft 365
To access Microsoft 365, from a supported web browser, go to Microsoft 365 at IU
. If you see a "Sign in" prompt, enter your IU username followed by @iu.edu
(do this no matter what your email address is), and then, at the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. (Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than and .) When prompted, confirm your identity with Two-Step Login (Duo), and then choose whether to stay signed into your Microsoft 365 account.
Microsoft 365 offers several options for accessing applications:
- Install Microsoft 365 apps: Available for installation on Windows and macOS computers; includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access (Windows only).
Note:To install Microsoft Teams, see Download Microsoft Teams Desktop and Mobile Apps.
- Windows:
- Log into Microsoft 365 at IU , and then, in the top right of your Microsoft 365 home page, select .
- Select , and then, under "Office apps & devices", click .
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your installation.
- macOS:
- Log into Microsoft 365 at IU , and then, in the top right of your Microsoft 365 home page, click .
- Select , and then, under "Office apps & devices", click .
- Run the downloaded installation package and follow the on-screen instructions.
- After installation, open any application and click the button to sign in.
- If you see a "Sign in" prompt, enter your IU username followed by
@iu.edu
(do this no matter what your email address is), and then, at the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. (Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than and .) When prompted, confirm your identity with Two-Step Login (Duo), and then choose whether to stay signed into your Microsoft 365 account.
To keep the software activated, you must sign into your Microsoft 365 account at least once every 30 days:
- From any Microsoft 365 application, choose at the top right.
- If you see a "Sign in" prompt, enter your IU username followed by
@iu.edu
(do this no matter what your email address is), and then, at the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. (Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than and .) When prompted, confirm your identity with Two-Step Login (Duo), and then choose whether to stay signed into your Microsoft 365 account.
To access Microsoft 365 services from within an app, you must sign into your Microsoft 365 account.

- Windows:
- Microsoft 365 on the web: Allows you to create and edit files using lightweight, web browser-based versions of Microsoft 365 applications. The web apps include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft OneNote. Click any app to launch it in your browser.
- Mobile apps: The mobile apps are scaled-down, touch-optimized versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft OneNote. To get mobile apps:
- Download the Microsoft 365 apps you want from your device's app store.
- After installation, open an app and click the button to sign in.
- If you see a "Sign in" prompt, enter your IU username followed by
@iu.edu
(do this no matter what your email address is), and then, at the password prompt, enter your IU passphrase. (Do not click anything on the sign-in pages other than and .) When prompted, confirm your identity with Two-Step Login (Duo), and then choose whether to stay signed into your Microsoft 365 account.
